Subterreanean Harvester harvest routine stops working

If a harvester unit is assigned the subterreanean locomotor, it works as intended most of the time but occasionally will stop harvvesting and just sit in the ore field or at the refinery. This requires the player to micromanage these harvesters far more than he should as of this moment. I am not sure but I think this has something to do with seeking new ore fields, as this happened to me most often on random maps with low resources and small ore fields with not much to harvest before a miner was forced to seek a new target.
