Bug Description

Kind of relates to this issue -

As tested by Aro in his TS modification MaxPlayer= can be a value higher then 2

e.g. MinPlayer=4

Would mean you would have to have 4 players to play this map.

If this was implemented this could be a way of prevent the player get reinforecements IE by enforcing the max number of players on a map.

Seems this was disabled in YR.

I'm not clear here, but are you saying this works in TS, but not in YR? As in you can set a map to have MinPlayer=4 and there will have to be 4 players ready to go before you can play the map in TS, but in YR it will let you play with less? If so I agree that this being fixed would be of benefit. Still doesn't fix issue 1260 which is mappers not play testing their maps properly of course, but could be useful with some other stuff implemented like Player@X working as trigger owners and for more house related events and actions for more complicated scripted rules and features on a map. It will also mean lazy mappers don't have to script in tests to make sure triggers only fire if the player they apply to is present provided they can be bothered to set the right values for MinPlayer.

Yes that is correct Blade.

I was trying to implement this for a onslaught time of game mode i.e. surviving waves of scripted AI attacks and discovered this issue after discussion with Aro.

Are we sure that existing maps would not get broken by this? Does FA2 set those values at all/properly? Do map writers set them manually?

mevitar (mevitar) wrote :

Looks like FA2 sets those values automatically, and .pkt files have to be edited by the modder anyway. However, I think this could possibly break the feature where maps can be played with only 1 player.

Couldn't new tags be provided so that the existing maps are not affected?

Blade (nadia-xy) wrote :

I disagree, playing with 1 player is effectively for debugging purposes and testing the terrain. No release map should be played with only one player and if someone wants to do so, they should know how to change these settings. Alternatively, have an exception in the case that the mode is skirmish and only one player is selected, though maps that rely on there being a certain number of players would still fall over.

Chanterier (speederyr) wrote :

1 player can be used by average players for testing new features in mods as well. Not only by modders for debug purposes.

Blade (nadia-xy) wrote :

Since not having the right number of players can break poorly coded maps, I'd say it should be enforced for maps that specify it. Afterall, it will be getting specified for a reason. There will be plenty of maps that don't enforce it or modders can included a sandbox maps that is intended purely for players to mess with all the new stuff without the AI getting in their face.
However I'm quite sure a special case for 1 player use can be developed. Have it so that if a player tries to remove more than the MinPlayer, it auto removes all but the human player and if they player tries to add another player it auto adds up to the MinPlayer. All only in Skirmish of course.
