unable to install vlc payer and multimedia codecs

I have installed ubuntu linux 10.10. I am unable to play mp3 and video files.when i try to play i received a error message "There seems to be a programming error in aptdaemon, the software that allows you to install/remove software and to perform other package management related tasks." how to solve this problem since i am a beginner for ubuntu linux i can not manage this. Help me.
