Bug Description

Kubuntu 5.10, but IIRC, same behavior on Edubuntu 5.10. Currently to cause
changes to xorg.conf to take effect, X must be forced to restart via Ctrl-Alt-BS
or otherwise. X should be smart enough to restart itself on logout if xorg.conf
has been changed.

To reproduce:
1-install from CD on new system
2-login with KDM/GDM greeter
3-see xdpyinfo and kinfocenter report improper 75 DPI, and too small fonts
4-add applicable DisplaySize to xorg.conf with favorite plain text editor, and
save changes
5-logout
6-login

Actual behavior
1-no apparent change in greeter appearance
2-xdpyinfo and kinfocenter report improper 75 DPI
3-fonts bad size

Expected behavior
1-greeter looks different
2-xdpyinfo and kinfocenter report correct DPI
3-fonts good size

Thanks for your bug. Marking as enhancement. This is not a common user request
and I'm not sure than gdm knows about the xorg configuration. You should also
open a bug against kdm for that

I filed this bug on kubuntu. I don't use or care about gdm.

I didn't mark this as enhancement because I consider it a bug. Every version of
kdm in SuSE I've used is smart enough to figure out if xorg.conf has changed
since last login and, if so, restart X before displaying the greeter, which I
just confirmed in SuSE 9.3.

You wrote "login with KDM/GDM greeter" so it was not clear you don't care about
the second. When you reassign a but could you use the "Reassign bug to owner and
QA contact of selected component " option?

also it can be useful to have an automatic backup of xorg.conf file, is something is going wrong and x.org crash with the new config file then the old one backupped should be restored.

I found a related bug on kde.org, although it was denied. I've suggested what's mentioned here, so we'll see what happens.

I don't know the problem of the reporter of http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=137029 but every SUSE I've installed automatically restarts X on logout if a change to xorg.conf has occurred and only one user was logged in through KDM.

Since with jaunty Alt+Ctrl+Bks does not work maybe this wish should be promoted to a bug?

Nope. Even before crtl + alt + backspace was removed, the proper way to restart X from kdm was to press alt + e, or choose the restart X option from the options menu. Additionally, you can re-enable crtl + alt + backspace from System Settings.

Also, this bug is becoming less important since xorg.conf usage is being phased out in graphics drivers. If somebody feels strongly about this issue, they should take it up again with KDE. But on a distro level I don't think anybody cares enough/we don't have enough resources.
