Bug Description
The new "sober" implementation does not work at all on Git 1.7.10 (the version in Debian 7).
In short after init + fetch (or fetch of an unknown branch), the remote tracking branch is not registered yet.
Therefore all the checkouts fail. The Git 1.9 I have before my eyes is much more nice in that respect.
The tests results must have sneaked in between other red builds, 'cause there was no ambiguity in tests !

Had to refactor further, and learn a bit more about Git subcommands.
Tests pass on 1.7.2.5 (Debian 6), 1.7.10.4 (Debian 7) and 1.9.3 (Fedora 20)
