Hi:

I had that problem after an upgrade, for Ubuntu 6.06.1. I opened
Synaptic, and made a search for Alsa. Then I installed all the items
that came up for the search. after rebooting, the sound worked again!

Alfred,
Thanks for the information. I tried reinstalling everything that was *previously* installed using your method with no luck. Did you mean you installed *everything* that came up after a search for Alsa (there were about 40 items)?!

Thanks

@linuxted: 'External Amplifier' needs to be unmuted.

@anmar: Your issue is completely different (due to a different DSP and codec). Please unmute and increase the level of 'PCM'. In the future please file a separate bug report.

Is this what I should get with amixer?:

Simple mixer control 'External Amplifier',0
  Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Mono: Playback [off]

I still get no sound. What should I have used to make
it muted?

Thanks

Correct, it's now muted. Now you need to try different settings of the 'IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA' element,

e.g., amixer set 'IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA' 1

or

amixer set 'IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA' 2

or

amixer set 'IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA' 3

Daniel,
I tried all three both as myself and as root (without rebooting) and still have no sound. The speakers are definitely plugged in and powered up. Any hints? I'm stuck.

Thanks,
Ted

Please boot off a desktop cd and check if sound is inaudible by default. If it isn't -- i.e., it's audible -- I need your /proc/asound/card0/codec97\#0/ac97\#0-0+regs as an attachment. Please also attach your current (inaudible) ac97\#0-0+regs . Be sure to label them unambiguously, thanks.

I had a similar problem, that has been solved: Ext Amplifier can remain unmuted, but line jack sense AND headphone jack sense need to be both turned off.

However, what is odd is that in Edgy sound worked fine (that is under the 2.6.17 kernel), however it did not work fine under Feisty (both the 2.6.19 and the 2.6.20 kernel). So I'm guessing there is nonetheless some bug in the module.

Kind regards
