cannot sync address book with google

I sometimes get this message just qafter opening the contacts list but I can induce it by pressing the sync button.

press sysnc - get banner saying sync is in progress
a few seconds ater I get the message 'fail to update, fail to authenticate, do you want to retry now?'
press yes
get another banner saying failed to authenticate, try again later
go back to the yes/no question
press no
get banner 'fail to authenticate, to retry later open contacts app and press sync button'

This was on the BQ4.5 phone under OTA10.1. Under OTA11 it is the same.

I have 4 gurgle accounts set up, so I have disabled access to 3 of them for the contacts app, leaving only my main one set up. I still get the same problems
