I got it work only for while,...
    to get WakeOnLAN you should
      SUSPEND computer, then you can wake it up
         but not if shut down by POWER/OFF,...

After some testing I could not this work out due
is I had PCI enabled computer did wake up immediately
after shutdown,... some other PCI device build in motherboard
made wake up!!!!

Dear customer,

We are going to solve this.
I will send you a password protected RAR file password= asrock to avoid that your virusscanner blocks it.
This is the magic packet tool that we used to test.
Then I would suggest that you run the test on 1 board, on the same way that I tested it, without boot devices, or you can also let it boot into Windows, and then shut windows down.
Then it must work.
If this doesn't work, I can discuss it with my manager, and maybe send a tested board, or you can send me the board, and I will thoroughly test the WOL.

I don't think it is related to the powersupply, I also tested it with a Be Quiet powersupply, and just also with a Coolermaster powersupply.

Your mother board's have had lot's
  of ACPI related problem's past according internet.

I do not belive I have defected
motherboard but If you like you
can send one of your tested motherboard's
and I will test it whit my:
-ram
-power supply
-prosesso whit cooling
-and mouse

If it works we have to then replace all three
motherboard's what I have purhased from
hardwaresand.

Operateing system will change change/controll
state of prosessor, ethernetcard as well power
mangment accpects - operateing system can mix
wol. I'am not supprised OS  could even
update some software at devices / firmware
automatically.

At moment it look's that
-ram
-power supply
-prosesso whit cooling
-keyboard
-screen can as well talk whit PCI Graphics adapter
or mouse

can cause PCI PME to do startup or
build erthernet card causes startup
due some non WOL ip package at internet,...

Testing all that takes several hours and
I have limited time.

I have only wild guesses,...

It certain that your motherboard & BIOS is not stable and
has bug OR you have managed to manufacture and distribute
3 defeted motherboards to same address - youe to me.

I suggest you forward issue to desing deparment,
     this is not service level question.

There numrous motherboards where WOL (wake onlan ), powernap, powerwake
,... are working whit Ubuntu 12.4 precise LTS.

If you like proceed service level way,procedures, you have around
  1% possibility that I have 3 defected motherbords.

So I suggest you send functional motherbord for test at
your exepense to my LAB. I send it back if it dose not work
  or if it works's I send my mother board. After you have then  
inspected it
found reason we replace threee more motherboard,....

For me this will cost around 500eur as lost time around 40-100 as
postal expenses. It's more than value of purhased product's and
at market's there is availble for that price trouble free mother
board. This is not frustation, it's question of money,...

Hi,

I sent a mail how to test WOL.
I tried to explain that WOL is not operating system related, it also works without an operating system.
We test it almost daily on all our boards, and do it in the following way:
We first establish the MAC address by trying to boot from LAN and press Scroll Lock when the MAC address appears (this way we are 100% certain that we use the correct MAC address).
Then BIOS defaults, to avoid any issues and change PCI Devices Power On to enabled.
Let the system start, and power down.
Now use magic packet to start the system.
This always works.

But to be absolutely certain I put the board on our testbench (just the board with CPU, memory and graphics card), and tested it with BIOS version 1.20, 1.30 and 1.40, BIOS defaults (F9) and only changed the PCI devices Power on to enabled, I have made some screenshots (you can do this when you have a USB stick connected at boot, and press F12, then it will create a screenshot on the USB stick)
Let the system start and power it down with the power button.(this is important, because if you disconnect the power you have to start the system at least once, otherwise it will not work)
Then sent a magic packet, and the board starts.
With all 3 BIOS versions it works without problem.
If Ubuntu says that there is a problem with ACPI, it is related to Ubuntu, not the board.
For WOL , you do not need to change any other settings, since this is handled by the BIOS.

Default AsRock Extreme4 Z68 - Wake On Lan - where in uefi?

     Hi all

     Forum first timer here. Hoping to get some help.

     Just got an AsRock Extreme4 and am using its onboard GBe port, and  
want to get WakeOnLan switched on. Have done this on many PCs before so  
feel i do know what i'm doing here, but i just can't seem to find the  
settings on the AsRock UEFI.

     Usual procedure is
     1) turn on WOL in BIOS
     2) enable magic packet on NIC Advanced settings in device manger
     3) enable the device to power windows on in the "power management"  
tab of the NIC in device manager
     4) get the MAC address using "ipconfig /all" and use that to sends  
a magic packet form another PC to wake from  
Suspend/Sleep/Hibernate/Soft-Off

     the bit that i'm getting stuck on is #1 (#2-4 is done with no  
success). in the UEFI i fonud optinos such as (paraphrased) "allow  
ring-in power on", "allow PCI Wake" and "allow boot from LAN", and  
turned them all on just in case with no luck

     hoping i'm missing some hidden menu somewhere. any ideas?

     OS is Win7 x64 Ultimate.
     My old PC performs WOL as expected (on the same LAN, same switch  
even). no improvement if i change network cables.

     thanks emily, but i already have that option switched on (and i  
know its working as i have a TV Tuner card which uses PCI Wake to turn  
my pc on via remote). WOL still is not working.

     i can confirm that the light on the NIC is on when the computer is  
off/suspended so the LAN card is still awake. also it blinks when i  
send a WOL packet, but the pc does not turn on.

     what else can i try? is there a specific WOL packet style i need  
to send (rather than the generic 'magic packet')? any special payload?
     what tools do you use in AsRock to test this?

     It might be a device setting in Windows. I had the same issue. To  
fix it I went to the network attapter setting and on the "Power  
Managemnt" tab, check "Allow this device to wake the computer" and  
un-check "Only allow a magic packet..."

     Thanks for the suggestion MrSparky_TX, but i have already tried  
all combinations on the Power Management tab, along with trying the two  
WOL related items on the Advanced tab (WOL Speed and Wake Up  
Capabilities). Also tried all the ACPI related UEFI toggles that are  
shown. I have also tried a variety of different WOL packet generator  
software, all of which successfully work on all my other PCs.
     Also tried waking from S5 and from S3 in case it is only working  
from specific ACPI states.

     still no luck

     Has anyone been able to get WOL working on this motherboard?
     Can someone from AsRock confirm the exact combination that they  
have used to get this working on the intergrated Broadcom NIC?

     I did get wake on lan to work. I set the PCI wake up option and  
made sure the Broadcom device had the wake on LAN options set. My naive  
approach was to try to browse to the ip address assigned to the device.  
That didn't work. However, a NetAwake application running on an ipod  
touch sent the right packet to make it wake up.

     The broadcom device is set to defaults for me. Those are "both"  
under the Advanced tab "Wake up capabilities" for how to wake up. On  
the power management tab, I have "allow the computer to turn off this  
device checked. I probably should uncheck that but it still woke up.  
Allow this device to turn on the computer is checked. Only wake on  
magic packet is not checked.

     My sleep state was whatever Windows uses when I click Sleep on the  
Start menu.

     I checked the BIOS settings and they were not as I remembered so I  
corrected the text above. I had not set PCI Devices Power On. Sure  
thought I had. The BIOS settings are:

     PCI Devices Power On: Disabled
     Ring-in Power On: Enabled
     RTC Alarm Power On: By OS

     Sleep is probably an S3 state, and sending a wake up packet woke  
the machine up. I tried S5 yesterday, soft off, where I can see that  
the transmit/receive lights are blinking on the network interface, but  
the operating system is shutdown. The machine was unresponsive to wake  
up packets in this state.

     Another test shows that S5 can also respond to wake up packets if  
the PCI Devices Power On is Enabled. So for S3, only Ring-in Power On  
is required, but for S5 both Ring-in and PCI Devices Power On are  
required. (PCI Devices Power On probably should be called ACPI PME but  
it does mention that in the comments. )

     Tested again with Ring-in Disabled. When sleeping, the Broadcom  
device still responds to the wake up packet with both Ring-in Disabled  
and with PCI Devices Power On Disabled. Just repeating that wake up  
from a soft off (s5) state requires PCI Devices Power On to be Enabled.

     thankyou very much for the extremely detailed response brukster

     despite trying all combinations including your exact settings i  
cannot get it to work.

     the only conclusion i can come to is this functionality is faulty  
on my motherboard (quite a strange part to be faulty as its such a  
specific fault, would have expected the entire NIC not to function  
rather than this exact sub-component of it)

     anyway, the only solution here is to get a second NIC, GBe Intel  
NICs go for about $15 on eBay so its not a big expendeture, but its  
annoying that one of the PCI slots will need to be used.
     could even dig up an old 100mbit nic i have lying around and use  
it purely for WOL (ie not set up an ip in the OS so not using it for  
any traffic, only use it for its MAC address and its WOL feature).  
neverthelss the PCI slot will need to be used up.

     unless someone has a brainwave or is able to reproduce my  
situation, this thread could be concidered closed

I have upgarded late's bios last time I complained.

You must have solution to get system stable,...

I suggest you to take 220V power cable and splice
it that way you get one copper wire to left hand and other
to right hand - then plug it to mains !

I like to get WakeOnLan as well shutdown -P or halt
working at two worksations, cluster stations at home network.
Those are runnin ubuntu 12.4, precise, ltsp FAT client.

As I said someone must start to DO real job/work and it is
not you - or are you the guy who make's code???

I suggest BUG at ROM or motherboard.

I have seen pdf manual and tried find answer at first palce
as well spended some time googleing.

Dear Joni,

I can see a whole range of mail correspondence, but just want to know which
BIOS version you use now and if you use default settings.
Please keep in mind that I cannot know your level of expertise, so I will
give maybe answers that you find stupid, but I will give all the answers,
and you can decide what you need.

There is an easy way to test WOL.
First of course you need to know the MAC address (which is not new to you)
1. disconnect all SATA devices and start the board
2. enter the BIOS and load default settings (F9) and change only Advanced>>
ACPI Configuration>> PCI Devices Power On to enabled, and save with F10
3. let the system start (it will probably end up in the UEFI BIOS if no boot
devices are found)
4. power down the system, but DO NOT disconnect the power cable
5. use magic packet to revive the board

This is the way we test it, and it eliminates all other possible causes.
When you disconnect the power, or switch it off, you must first allow the
system to boot, and then power it down before it works.
If the system is powered down with the power button it should always work.

Please let me know the outcome.
