Bug Description

laptop dell E4300
dell port replicator
screen del 1900x1280
ubuntu 9.04

problem: when switching from laptop screen to my dell screen 1900x1280 it gives a blank screen. Also on startup it gives blank black.

Workaround:
First switch from screen by truning laptop screen off go to resolution 1280x1200 on the monitor. Work for about 10 minitus and then switch the screen to 1900x1280.

extra:
Don't leave your computer for more then x minutes else you never know if you need to repeat the process to get the native screen resolution of your 24'

I have a similar problem with my setup:

Dell D620
Dell port replicator
Dell 2100FP monitor (1600x1200 native) at home
Dell 24" monitor at work
Ubuntu 8.10

Whenever I want to switch monitors, I have to restart Ubuntu. If I work on the laptop screen, suspend, dock, then resume, it never detects the big monitor. It keeps using the laptop screen. To make matters worse, the big monitor's native resolution isn't available in the Screen Resolution applet. The only workaround I've found is to restart.

I'm happy to provide more details about my system, but it looks like apport-collect is only available in 9.04? Let me know if there's any data I should gather from my 8.10 setup. I've been reluctant to upgrade because of the reported problems with the Intel chipset video driver in 9.04.

Also, this sounds sort of like an X Freeze bug. Some additional debug steps are documented for this class of bug, if you'd like to help gather some additional data: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze#How%20to%20Get%20a%20Batchbuffer%20Dump%20(-intel%20only)

No the computer keeps working. You here sound etc and can switch back to
laptop and later try again go the 24"

Als somethimes I notice that there is a trail, some sort transparancy of
the desktop when switcing back and forth. Everthing works but all
windows when moved leave a trail behind. I'm not sure if its related to
the switch bug.

Onno, upstream needs further feedback from you. If you are still seeing this bug please discuss with them at
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23720

Try removing the 'Virtual' line from your xorg.conf, it may be limiting your resolution capabilities.
