I'm experiencing the same issue but I'm able to move mouse pointer.

From time to time I'm switching between single and dual-monitor configuration on my laptop with dual video (Lenovo V580) and I'm observing alike screen freezing which takes about half of minute.

I/O led does not show heavy activity and it looks like background processes are working (at least music is playing).

I am also experiencing this issue couple of times every day. Music in background keeps on playing and I can move mouse pointer, but everything else on screen is frozen. Usually if I wait around 30 seconds or if I switch to tty1 and back to tty7 it also usually solves the problem. Also I should note that when I press Ctrl+Alt+1 there is couple of second delay before showing the terminal.

I am using dual monitor setup and integrated Intel graphics chip:

In my case the HTML5 player (triggered from Chromium/Opera/Firefox etc.) does this terrible freeze. (only the pointer is alive)
After the freeze switching to another TTYx takes about a MINUTE (Ctrl+Alt+Fx).

Ctrl+Alt+F1 does not work for me. But I can restart the machine with the magic key (Alt+PrtSc+REISUB)

We experience the same problem with Ubuntu 14.04.3 on Intel Compute Stick (kernel 3.16.0-58).
The device works without problems for a while, but after a random time (between 6-7 hours to 1-2 days) the screen freezes, but applications on the device still run.

I've submitted a bug report to Intel thinking the problem was in their driver, but now I think problem is elsewhere (since users with Nvidia experience it).

If this can help, I can add that while the screen is frozen if you do the:

xrandr --output HDMI1 --off

and

xrandr --output HDMI1 --preferred

the screen start working again without reboot.

Maybe the problem is in xrandr ?

Thank you,

Luca

Daniel Qian, as per http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/vostro-3400/drivers an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (A12). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything?

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible:
1) Please provide the output of the following terminal command (not perform an apport-collect):
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
2) Please make a comment specifically advising on if there was an improvement or not.
3) Please mark this report Status New. If it's not reproducible, please mark this as Invalid.

Thank you for your understanding.
