Bug Description

Binary package hint: thunderbird

(1) Ubuntu 8.04;
(2) Thunderbird 2.0.0.23;
(3) Thunderbird keeps its hands off my addresses;
(4) Thunderbird adds unwanted quotes to email addresses that have hyphenated names, such as : freedos-user

I enter the correct address in the address book. Later when I use the address when writing an email, I notice that quote marks have been added. This results in my posts being bounced by the freedos-user organization due to the wrong address. I ran clanscan but found nothing?

P.S. When I added a second entry for freedos-user with the name (of the address) enclosed in square brackets and in caps, Thunderbird left the address alone but put quotes around the square brackets enclosing the name of the addressee.

Possible Work-around. I found that when the display name has a comma in it, that's the only time I get the quotes added. E.g.

if the display name is:
    Smith, John
then email address comes out as:
    "<email address hidden>

if the display name is:
    Smith - John
then email address comes out as:
    <email address hidden>

Hope this helps.

Tom: Thanks for comment. The problem disappeared by itself? The address
had a hyphen but no comma? Bob T.

Huh... not for me. I'm using version 2.0.0.24, I wonder if this is a new bug.

Looks like I spoke too soon. I removed all the commas from the display names in my address book and yesterday that seemed to do the trick. But today, the problem has returned and I haven't changed a thing.

So to restate the bug with new information:

Thunderbird inserts quotation marks around the part of the email address before the "@" when inserting addresses from the address book. This bug seems to occur with most but not all of my email addresses and I have not been able to determine why.

Work-around for me is, after double clicking on an address to insert it into the "To" field, I just manually remove the quotation marks.

Additional Info:

The cause was because I had a space at the end of the email address.

For those emails that ended with a space, Thunderbird put the email address in quotes, making it unusable.

Hello Robert,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with Thunderbird.

You made this bug report in 2009 and there have been several versions of Ubuntu and Thunderbird since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
Or, if it is still a problem, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect 426959

and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and Thunderbird better.
