Bug Description

With the current ubuntu kernel linux-image-2.6.32-10-generic version 2.6.32-10.14 on lucid, amd64 I'm experiencing annoying display freezes. System was running fine and stable over weeks! with karmic and its kernels.

Usually the problem occurs after some period of work. When the display suddenly freezes.
Switching to console Strg+1 does not work, only reboot helps. However, network and sysrq still working...

Funny thing is: with mainline kernel 2.6.33.3 (from linux-image-2.6.32-02063203-generic) I even cannot get to the login screen.
Fortunately, 2.6.33-rc4 (from linux-image-2.6.33-020633rc4-generic) seems to work quite stable.
The error messages found in kern.log vary from kernel to kernel:

Can you please attach the output of "lspci -vvnn" to this bug report. After that, wait until it happens again... when it hangs, please login via ssh from another computer; once logged into the hung computer save the contents of "dmesg" plus copies of the files "/var/log/X*" and attach those to the bug report as well.

Finally, please collect a batch buffer dump recorded on the hung machine. The specific steps required to do this is described here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze#How%20to%20Get%20a%20Batchbuffer%20Dump%20%28-intel%20only%29

PS, I started to experience a similar hang on lucid just yesterday.

btw, I selected the "Recovery" option for the latest kernel now, then I selected "Repair packages" and that fetched and installed a new mesa version (7.7-0ubuntu5) and using that new mesa version I can boot Lucid again (so you might want to try that as well and see if that help you too).

Not seeing any issues with graphics. Dmesg is clean.
So this package upgrades seem to have solved my problems. Thanks!

I've been having this same kind of hang ever since Kubuntu 9.04. Back then I used the 2.4 version of X to avoid the problem (and I can still do that). It meant I could not have accelerated graphics but that wasn't much of an issue for me. But since 9.10 it also means I cannot suspend and resume (either to ram or disk), which I really need to work to be productive.

So, I've been trying every tip I can find to work around this problem. I'm attaching the logs from the latest hang. Since upgrading to the 2.6.33 kernel at least I can VT switch to the console instead of having to SSH in. And I can even start a new X application (like xterm) which I could never do before. But existing X windows are all gone into never-never land, as is the window manager (though the processes are still there of course).

I'll be trying the various xorg.conf options mentioned here to narrow the subsystem it is in:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze#How%20to%20Get%20a%20Batchbuffer%20Dump%20%28-intel%20only%29

(The batch buffer dump won't be useful on my version but I have the i915_error_state file instead).

Passing acpi=off results in normal operation (screen doesn't flicker, launching fullscreen video is fine), however, dmesg gives "vgaarb: this pci device is not a vga device" and the secondary screen does not work.

This is a problem on an HP mini 210-1010nr running i915 driver. My dmesg contains the "Hangcheck timer elapsed" message as well as the "i915_do_wait_request returns -5" message. In addition (and this may or may not be important) I get the message [drm] Big FUFO is enabled" repeated several times around when the happens.

My report differs from the previous reports, though, in that the screen does not totally hang. Instead, X restarts into "recovery" mode. Virtual terminal still work, so I am able to do Ctrl-F1, look at dmesg, etc. Subsequent attempts to restart X fail.

I didn't have this problem running fully updated Karmic on the same machine. This started happening with Lucid, which I just installed. It is pretty much a deal-breaker, and it renders the system unusable.

I have now learned a little more. I apologise if, as an amateur enthusiast, I am not invited to comment here. I reinstalled Lucid for the nth time yesterday. My chipset according to Memtest 86+ is an Intel i845E/G/PE/GE (ECC: disabled)/ FSB:132MHz. Having read about the general answer to the crash symptoms for Intel 8XX chipsets I have removed (using Software Centre) Compiz, turned the screensaver to Blank Screen, and turned off all power saving options. Initially the system ran well. The crashes started at some after I had set F-Spot as my screensaver and tweeked the power saver settings. The last crash I think coincided with opening a second Firefox window. Fingers crossed again now for an improvement.

This is not a duplicate of #477256. That bug is about the i855 driver and does not mention the i915 driver or the "[drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung" syslog entry.

This is the exact message I see in the syslog:

Oct 8 01:56:20 localhost kernel: [175362.180132] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
Oct 8 01:56:20 localhost kernel: [175362.180146] render error detected, EIR: 0x00000000
Oct 8 01:56:20 localhost kernel: [175362.180172] [drm:i915_do_wait_request] *ERROR* i915_do_wait_request returns -5 (awaiting 14505009 at 14505008)

After this the GPU does not work. I can restart X but only get a blank screen with a mouse on it.

Anyone find any workarounds for this? One might be to use the vesa driver but that is less than ideal.

Similar bug has started to appear here sometime in November 2011. My system is:
Ubuntu 10.04.3
Linux 2.6.32-37-generic
Dell Optiplex 760

Symptoms:
 * the first occassions were with a blank screensaver + lock. I have returned after an hour to find that the screen is not blanked, it was even updating, but after moving a mouse it went blank and displayed password prompt as it should

 * now a new symptom happens frequently (twice or thrice a week at least), always when I am off the computer for several hours - the X restarts so when I come back, the GDM greeter is on. I have changed the screensaver to space images, might be the reason. Happened even soon after a reboot

I think I may have this or something related on Xubuntu 12.04 LTS. It happened last Monday after browsing with Firefox for some hours IIRC. I did a kernel update from linux-image-3.2.0-29-generic:amd64 to linux-image-3.2.0-33-generic:amd64 the previous Thursday, so it might have been introduced then.

The mouse pointer was movable, everything else was still, clicking had no effect, keyboard had no effect (e.g. tried ctrl+alt+f1, I didn't know about alt+sysrq before now)

The laptop is a Thinkpad X220 with a hardware switch to turn off and on all radio (wifi, bluetooth, 3G) so I tried that, it had no effect. Then I tried ssh-ing into the machine, and apparantly network-manager was still running and had managed to connect after I switched wifi off and on again. From within ssh everything seemed just fine. I tried killing firefox and restarting lightdm, this had no effect though (how does one restart X in Xubuntu?).

I will collect more info if it happens again (just noticed https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSystemCrash), but for now I've pasted the relevant bits from /var/log/syslog* at http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/1393943/ (all the way down to where I hit the radio switch)
