Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

Problems with shutdown an restore have been around for quite long in Firefox. THIS is really embarrassing when I try to talk about stability on GNU-Linux.

Dear Micah,
From the USER PERSPECTIVE it seems to be a problem with Firefox, since it shows the well embarrassing message almost every time they open the laptops. That what our test users tell me.
Is there a way to simply "hide" some of these error states from the user? Ultimately the main goal for a browser is to browse the web and not get stuck att error messages! As long as the browser gets stuck at a easily recoverable error condition, HUMAN USERS will see this as a bug.
Thanks in advance for giving us a suggestion on how to avoid this. Is there a script to run on shutdown, hibernate, and suspend to avoid this?Best regards, /Macchi

My apologies...I didn't realize that you were referring to the session restore window. There should be a fix for apport on Karmic soon. Would you be able to try to produce a crash report?

Actually, this is not a Firefox issue. That's the standard Session Restore message. That should happen on Shutdown so that your tabs are restored. It should not happen on Hibernation though. I would check into why your hibernation is not working properly.

This is most likely an issue with Firefox not being capable of properly restoring the pages after resuming. I'm setting the package back to 'firefox-3.5' and am subscribing the MozillaTeam, they know more about Firefox and could help with determining the cause of this problem.

I have a new install of Karmic Kubuntu (not an upgrade) and Firefox package version is 3.5.7+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.9.10.1.
This is a laptop with a LUKS-encrypted HDD, so I have enabled the auto-login feature of KDM.

Every time I boot-up, KDE restarts firefox (if it was up when I shut down) and firefox complains that it can't resume the session. If I click on the try again button on the "it's embarrassing" page, firefox can resume the session.
Furthermore, if I set a photo plasmoid to display a "picture of the day", it also complains that it can't access Internet.

So the problem is real and reproducible, but I think it is related to the LAN connection not set-up in time for the user applications. I never had this issue with the same laptop when using Jaunty.

Please file a new bug for your connectivity issues.

@Everyone
This is the standard restore message from Firefox allowing you to choose which pages you want to restrore. This is not a bug.

@Sense Hofstede

This user shouldn't have to restart all of the programs when Hibernate is selected. Perhaps that should be triaged instead.

Micah, If I close my firefox window without closing the session and reopend firefox the Session Restore message will not be shown. The 'standard' behaviour is that the firefox session (open tabs) is restored. A user would expect the same behaviour when firefox is closed as the result of a hibernate or logout. I suspect that what happens is that firefox is not able to store the session succesfully and henceforth deduces that the next time it is started it had 'crashed' before. So we have two behaviors here:
1) user opens firefox, starts browsing, opens tabs, etc.
2) user closes firefox
3) user reopens firefox and the previous session (result of 1) is restored

-and-
1) user opens firefox, starts browsing, opens tabs, etc.
2) user leaves the firefox window open but shuts down, hibernates, her PC
3) user starts computor and logs on. The firefox window is reopend by the window manager.
4) as the firefox was not closed 'normally' it assumes that it crashed

There should be a way to distinguish an actual crash of firefox and firefox simply being closed as the result of a shutdonw or reboot.
