I thought this bug was fixed once and for all in compiz 0.9.7.4 (bug 953839)... ?

affects: unity (Ubuntu) → compiz (Ubuntu)

It looks like it only is a problem affecting vmware installations. When run on iron, I can resize windows with no problem.

I'm also seeing this in VMware (workstation 7.1 and workstation 8.0). It's just impossible to grab the edge or corner of a window to resize it.

It might have something to do with Unity-2d, that is what vmware uses.

I don't think it's helpful for this bug to be marked as a duplicate of a generic issue (which has been rumbling on for a long time). It seems to be a specific regression related to bug 953839, which has been fixed (but apparently not for Unity 2D users).

My experience is that, when using terminal, on unity 2D, in VMWare, I get the resize cursor just *below* the bottom of the window (I guess this is where its shadow would be) but when I click, the click goes through to the window underneath. I can resize the window by finding the very top pixel that shows the resize cursor and then moving one pixel further up. I.e. the resize cursor is not shown but the window can be resized.
