20120301 alternate install boot to command prompt on G3 iMac

the 20120301 Lubuntu precise-alternate-powerpc iso install completes but boots to command prompt on a 400 MHz G3 iMac. I was able to boot to the desktop and use the system after modifying /etc/X11/xorg.conf like I've done so many times in the past with other Linux distributions.
Error message following "startx" command at command prompt is attached as a picture.

I got this error the first time I logged into Lubuntu, after fixing the display using the xorg.conf settings above. I can reproduce the same error by attempting to run Software Centre. I'm also using an iMac G3. I'll check to see if this is still the case when I've updated the machine.
