Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I have occasional corruption of graphics output in circumstances I cannot yet reproduce.

What I can reproduce however is a persistent kernel panic when trying to log into a kubuntu/plasma desktop session. Unfortunately it is not recorded in the kernel logs, thus I cannot post it yet - but it suffices to install kubuntu-desktop, run gdm, and pick the only offered KDE/plasma session from gdm's session chooser.

Note that the Matrox G450 card is not used. Its ports are unconnected, and the kernel boots with video=intelfb, and the monitor is connected to the onboard i915G driver.

Panics -> kernel.

If you can repro the gfx issue, post a separate bug report on that using 'ubuntu-bug xorg' and include a screenshot or photo of the screen displaying the corruption.

Same bug found on my desktop system with a Pentium 4 3 GHz processor on an Intel 915GAV motherboard with latest upgraded packages as of 2011-Jun-09.

Googling, I found http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3116630.0 but the workaround it suggests is to add i915.modeset=0 to the kernel options. However, my monitor is an LG 17 inch monitor with resolution 1360x768, and using the above kernel option only gives me 1024x768 as my resolution which is horrible to look at. I can't login to Natty on my desktop till this bug is fixed.

This bug does not exist on my laptop, a Compaq Presario C770TU, which is why I say "on my desktop".

Please can it be fixed soon? Thanks.

I posted the workaround that Shriramana commented on in Kubuntuforums. It worked on my Foxconn 915M12-GL-6ls motherboard (Intel 915GL based) desktop running Kubuntu 11.04 with the 2.6.38-8-generic kernel and Xorg 2:1.10.1-1ubuntu1.1 dated 21 May 2011. The Foxconn MB uses an 82915G/GV/910GL on board integrated graphics controller for video display. Sorry to hear that the workaround doesn't work for all... Hopefully there will be a fix forthcoming soon.

Cheers, Bill

Here's the original text of the workaround:
-----------------------------------------------------------
I booted to the 11.04 signon screen. Then did a ctl-alt-F1 to get a terminal window in Kubuntu (without logging on to KDE.) At this point, I went to the default directory (/etc/default) and modified grub2 file to boot as follows:

sudo nano /etc/default/grub

Change the line:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i915.modeset=0"

Then rebuild the grub.cfg file by running:

sudo grub-mkconfig --output=/boot/grub/grub.cfg

Once this is all done do a

sudo shutdown -r now

to reboot. At this point I was able to boot into the KDE graphical desktop signon screen and actually signon and get to the graphic desktop without kernel faulting.

This is NOT a dup of bug 727594, as it was fixed with:

<quote>
xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.14.0-4ubuntu7.1) natty-proposed; urgency=low

  * Add 119_disable_relaxed_fencing.patch: The relaxed fencing
    optimization is suspected as the cause for various i915/945 gpu lockup
    issues. This disables the optimization by default but adds an
    xorg.conf parameter to let people experiment with it turned on.

and I have this update installed on my 915GAV and I *still* am getting the problem. :(

Matthias Andree, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please capture the oops following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Capturing_OOPs ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
