Bug Description

Attempted to install ubuntu on an lpar on a pSeries 520 with vtopt virtual cdrom to vscsi harddrive (and of course veth ethernet).
Attempted both ubuntu-10.10-alternate-powerpc.iso and ubuntu-10.04-server-powerpc.iso

yaboot could boot the kernel and the installer started fine. However the installer was unable to find the cdrom.
RHEL6-ppc4 could install fine on this same LPAR.
Examining lsmod output, ibmveth and ibmvscsic were present on the RHEL installation.
Upon extracting the contents of linux-image-2.6.35-22-powerpc64-smp on an intel system, I found that the relevant kernel modules were not present.

Per discussion on #ubuntu-powerpc with cjwatson.
Please enable CONFIG_IBMVETH and CONFIG_SCSI_IBMVSCSI on powerpc.
add ibmveth to debian.master/d-i/modules-powerpc/nic-modules

Thanks,
Chris Dukes

Yep, seems like this should be fairly quick for a kernel bod to do.

Hitting my head against this while trying to install on a new Power 7. Is there any workaround besides cross-compiling a custom kernel?

Actually this can be closed out now. I'm now at an employer that
doesn't use IBM POWER hardware.

If you choose to pursue this anyways, add the virtual fibre channel
driver to the list as well.

There should also be a Bug open for the linux kernel in 11.04
being linked such that it is unbootable on POWER. It can be
marked as closed as well.

Thanks for the note. And apologies for such a long delay that the fix is no longer relevant for you. I've already partially commited a fix via bug 943090 (ie enable CONFIG_SCSI_IBMVSCSI=m). CONFIG_IBMVETH=m is already set. But I might as well go ahead and fix the rest of this in case other's would benefit. As such, I've added ibmveth to debian.master/d-i/modules-powerpc/nic-modules and based on comment #3 have also enabled CONFIG_SCSI_IBMVFC=m.

I'm unable the find the other bug you mentioned which could be closed. If you have a bug number you could point me at, I'd be glad to get it closed out. Thanks.

All three module would need to be in the d-i/modules-powerpc/<whatever>

Cool. Because of the problem we installed Debian on the Power 720 setup, nice that Ubuntu is a possibility in the future.

Also, bug 720911 looks like it's already been closed. Thanks.
