commercial fonts like minionpro don't work in latex

Bug Description

I converted some commercial fonts with lcdf and tried to install them using the latex-packages from ctan. http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/

minionpro
myriad
(they are part of acrobat reader 7)

I did the same with garamond, there is a version of this font on ctan (in the section urw), and the problem was the same.

the installing procedures work fine on ms-windows, but not on ubuntu: there are only small black boxes for each letter in ubuntu, but no errors reported. It looks that latex correctly recognises the metrics, but the dvi viewer is not able to use the actual font.

the problem also exists with pdflatex.

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 alpha?
