Bug Description

After last update (see the update log) I got a hard system lock. It was completely irresponsive . Required hard reboot.
I looked in the logs and found this:

There are additional problems I experience:

I guess, this is related to the video/radeon/KMS. This is why:

mplayer/totem pauses every 20 sec while playing most(?) of avi videos full screen.
With the older/unupdated 2.6.31-14 version I could use w3m in the vt with all cyrillic fonts and images shown wonderfully.
The update breaks now.

I had a very similar problem when I was testing KMS on a custom kernel.

I compiled 2.6.32-rc5 kernel. I had crashes while some garbage was spewn to the logs.
All similar symptoms
I will try to rollback to the state before the upgrade

I am on 2.6.31-14 now. I tried it before. It gave me xvid/kms video in vt problems. I installed anothe version of 2.6.31-15.28 (I guess). Then I rebooted with radeon.modeset=1 boot option. On the 31-14 kernel it seems to fix both the xvid and kms.
I still have no idea what fixed it
Strange and funny thing is that Xorg lfor the crash session og is gone ! I cannot find it. This is too mysterious.
I am sure there is a kms/xvid/radeon bug in the upcoming kernel release

Update: all kernel versions installed on my system get kernel crashes now.
The logs are either speechless, i.e., do not contain any entries at the time of crash or have garbage when a freeze happens.

I still suspect KMS+radeon chip...

A freeze happens when I am Gnome/KDE with compiz enabled. I usually manipulate window(s) when it gets frozen. REISUB sysreq combination always works.
Here's sample crash outputs:

Hi Tormod,
Well, my 6.32-rc5 was doing that. rc7 does not let me even login through the gdm , it locks the system right there. So does the 2.6.32-020632-generic from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/. That is similar to the behavior described here http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14331
thanks

Yes I was right. Booting Linux version 2.6.32-996-generic (root@zinc) (gcc version 4.2.3 (Ubuntu 4.2.3-2ubuntu7)) #200912071003 SMP Mon Dec 7 10:56:26 UTC 2009 with the radeon.modeset=1 brings me as far as to the gdm login and then leaves me with the black screen while absolutely no keys working, even SysRq won't help this time.

This is a different behavior and I guess is different issue. Do you want me to upload the logs which are not garbled, though not clear on what is happening at the crash.

Let me know

As a matter of fact, even when not using radeon.modeset=1 option and with the "dri off" in the xorg.conf I find some garbled entries in the kernel logs. When a machine crashes (it happened once) or when it does not.
Is it a rlogsys bug? Here's what I found in the kernel.log recently

Dec 23 00:46:29 jenshen kernel: imklog: Cannot open proc file system, 2.
Dec 23 00:47:58 jenshen kernel: imklog 4.2.0, log source = /var/run/rsyslog/kmsg started.

Interestingly, some weirdness occurs that messes up the rsyslog sometimes when the whole system is dead, sometimes when it is not. Could that still be the part of the kernel code related to kms?
Should I change the tag?

Hi gene,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 489447

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
