There are problems with the special keys on my dell 1557. When I click one to turn up the volume, up to maximum and I have to restart the session.

Same problem here.
The mute key works ok, while just pressing once the volume up or down keys seems to generate a loop where the volume is continuously increased (or decreased).
After that, it's not possible to access the gnome menus anymore and the system becomes pretty much unusable, requiring a session restart.

Now when I upgrade the kernel or I do any operation on kernel, clicking on brightess button appears the notify. When I upgrade kernel another time notify doesn't appear. This happen alternatively...

I have similar symptoms on kubuntu 9.10. The system does not freeze and is usable, but when you press volume up or volume down keys the system continue to raise/lower the audio volume and is impossible to stop or invert the process.

If you reassign some different key to the same action (I tried next track and previous track) everything will work ok.
So I tried to set a different task to these two keys (volume up and volume down) and the result is that kde configuration window and xev ignore this key (showing no message at all).

Another bug on special key: when you press the Eject button, the mounted CD-ROM is umounted but the CD/DVD isn't ejected.

Just an FYI guys. Canonical is working with Dell to get a hold of one of these machines and fix the issue. Hopefully the unit we get can reproduce the issues you are seeing.

Best to no try and downgrade to A01 as you have the potential to break your machine.

This issue affects volume up & volume down keys.

Looks to be an issue with the dell-wmi kernel module and the way bioses A02 and greater send the volume up and down via wmi interface.

We are working to figure out a fix now and talk with the bios teams on what & why there was this behavior change.

Whoops. Apparently they are not coming via wmi .. they are just keypresses that need a release. Will have a fix up soon.

I've attached a fix kernel fix for the issue. I have the debs in the zip file here attached here. This fix is only for 2.6.31, for Lucid will have to wait till new udev release is included for a fix for this, as these fixes have moved to udev for 2.6.32 and onward.

I've tested it. But if you all can also test and give feedback would help.

Fix is not in upstream udev ... so will make it into Lucid 10.04 release once they do their next pull of udev.

Best to wait for a binary kernel. No special flags or .config options are needed for the patch. Should be in -20 kernel for karmic when released.

I also have a Dell 1557 with 64-bit karmic 9.10 installed (it just arrived today and I just finished installing Ubuntu) but in addition to the volume key bug I'm also not able to hear any sound from my computer. Is this related to this bug or is it whole different problem? I'm guessing it's the latter.

Doh! Should have looked closer. It's been committed to the kernel sources for Karmic, but after the -20 kernel was pushed to -proposed. It will be in the -21 kernel. I'm not sure what the timeline is for that kernel. Stefan Bader would know more about that.

I'm running Karmic (9.10) amd64 on my Dell Studio 1558 (Intel Core i3 processor) and I also experience this bug.

The mute key (F7) works fine.
But the volume up (F9) and volume down (F8) keys have problems
Not only do they not stop increasing (or decreasing) in volume, but my computer becomes unresponsive.
I find myself having to press control + alt + delete to restart (brings me back to the good old days of Windows!)

Looking forward to a fix.

           File a new bug. These are bios issues. Unfortunately for these machines they do not get the grand Ubuntu enablement treatment other Dell machines get. Also this issue can only fix with Ubuntu 10.04 at this point (some new infrastructure to handle problems like this).

            If you install 10.04 beta. Copy the file I have attached to this comment to /lib/udev/rules.d/

            Report here if it works or open a new bug and report that here.
