Bug Description
Binary package hint: ubiquity
Karmic alpha- 6 i386 desktop, installing from USB stick (created with Jaunty USB boot stick creator) onto a Dell E5500. Using custom partitioning to install to a preexisting (ex Intrepid) partition.
Installation runs normally until the stage "running update-grub" at which point the ubiquity window closes without warning.
On rebooting, Karmic produces a few error messages and then a totally black screen (I think the backlight is turned off too). The kernel is alive because Ctrl-Alt-Delete causes a reboot. Booting into recovery mode I can see errors about a read-only filesystem. Running fsck on the ext4 / partition and then rebooting allows Karmic to boot to GDM and I can log in to a normal desktop.
Possible causes - I also have Jaunty installed on a JFS partition on the install disk, which is unusual and may be acting as a trigger for this bug. Also possibly significant - while the installer is booting from USB I see error messages about being unable to read from (if I remember right) sr0.
I have tried this 3 times with the same result.
I have re-checked the MD5sum of the ISO image and re-created the USB stick.
If you are able to reproduce this, please attach /var/log/syslog.
