Bug Description

Binary package hint: rrdtool

When scanning the import queue in Launchpad Rosetta for issues that need manual intervention, I found the following issue with the rrdtool package, which prevents a smooth import into Launchpad Rosetta and causes the Ubuntu Translation Coordinators to manually adjust or remove .po files.

In the source/po/ directory the rrdtool.pot template file is missing. Therefor corresponding .po files cannot be imported into Rosetta and won't appear in the language-packs.
If the translations are not used anyways, please consider to remove the po/ directory.
If the translations should be used, please fix the build script to actually build the .pot file.

For general guidelines how to ensure smooth imports into Launchpad Rosetta, please see:

Its quite unclear what the status of this bug is at the moment. While it says "In Progress", it is not assigned to anyone, and so is probably not being looked at. Also, Adi is not subscribed, and so cannot answer questions about the rules file he has posted.

I'm unfamiliar with the translations process, can somebody who understands it please take a look at this bug again and set the status appropriately?

Setting back to "Confirmed" in both rrdtool and ubuntu-translations.

As far as I know, there is no one working on this right now. From the translations side, what we can do is to give advice on the solution:

All Ubuntu packages in main and restricted need to create a .pot file (also called template) during the build process. That allows translations to be imported into Launchpad and then to be shipped in language packs.

The creation of the .pot file is done through a rule in the debian/rules file, which is what rrdtool is missing. that means its translations cannot be imported (although there aren't any yet) and it is not exposed in Launchpad for translation. For more information on how a package should generate .pot translation templates, you can see the following document:

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/Internationalisation/Packaging#TranslationTemplates

Strangely enough, after testing a local build of the package following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/Internationalisation/RecipeVerifyingTranslationUploads, I've noticed that rrdtool seems to generate the rrdtool.pot file inside rrdtool_1.4.3-1ubuntu1_i386_translations.tar.gz, but it is somehow not getting imported. I'll have to investigate why on Monday.

As per the comment on Adi not being subscribed to the bug: he actually is, as he is a member of the Ubuntu Translations Coordinators team, the bug supervisor for the ubuntu-translations project, so he is subscribed to all ubuntu-translations mail

It seems now the template has made it into Launchpad with the latest upload two weeks ago. It only appeared a couple of days ago on the imports queue, though, but this might have been related to the issues there were in the template approver script.

Anyway, marking it now as Fix Released.

Alright, looks good, marking the Ubuntu bug as fix released too.

I believe the reason for the long pause was that an archive admin had to move some of rrdtool's dependencies into main, which has happened now.
