attempted install of ubuntu desktop (canary) to sony vaoi - something went wrong

- sony vaio svp112a1cw (i5-9400u, 4gb, intel haswell-ULT)

** background

NO internet connected until post-first problem message, and using defaults as much as possible to install to box overwriting whatever is there

** expected result

install completes & asks me to reboot

** actual result

something went wrong and I was told to reboot

attempted install on sony vaoi again (2021.12.16) which fails.

this is possibly a duplicate bug report of 1951349 (I didn't look today, but was unwilling to dup it last time)
