Bug Description

This issue is minor.

QA-test install on
- hp dc7700 (c2d-e6320, 5gb, nvidia quadro nvs 290)

(testcase: manual install, equivalent of install alongside)

** description & actual results

On first login, there is NO WALLPAPER background.

** expected results
I liked the wallpaper I saw behind `ubiquity` , and expected to see that on login (or another wallpaper).

** further notes

I logged out, logged in again & this time I had wallpaper. (the wallpaper I saw & loved during install). Maybe this was a one-off fluke, but reporting... Minor issue.

Note:

in exploring the issue as I wrote the initial report.. I opened Desktop.Settings (right click background with aim of selecting another wallpaper)

I'm now getting lots of black flashes on the box... which look like graphics issues with the nvidia card.. (nouveau related?) I'd normally `sudo lshw -C video` to look, however..

The system is now rather unstable, and keeps pausing???

eg. I have a terminal open, if i hit "gggg" quickly, i can then count "1234" (sometimes reaching 12 or 20) before I see those letters appear in konsole...

Something is up now, and it's not just a wallpaper issue.
(I'll quit now.. it's getting slower & I can't get it to even complete a `sudo dmesg` to explore ....)

I may need to return to this later.. for now I'll leave it as no wallpaper ... SysRq REISUB works so kernel is good

"Yes this looks like a nouveau kernel driver bug. I recommend using the proprietary Nvidia driver instead, but it seems your GPU only supports driver version 340 and that's now too old to be supported in Ubuntu 21.10.

So to continue using the "nvidia quadro nvs 290" you should probably install Ubuntu 20.04 instead where it is still supported.

I suspect they're related - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1930945

I saw request #6 last night & zsync'd the current impish daily & did a QA-test install on dc7700 (http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/424/builds/234968/testcases/1301/results/)

This is IMPISH and NOT HIRSUTE, but I expected the issue to be there.. On install, & post-install this issue did NOT re-occur. I adjusted displays to match my setup, logout & login etc. and the issue was not re-created.

My plan (assuming re-created issue) was then to add requested kernel (comment #6) to see if re-occurs but no point given I've been unable to re-create issue. (I see no point installing hirsute for testing)

Note: this box has had recent (graphic) issues with Kubuntu & Ubuntu only, neither of which I'm testing very regularly any-more (box is fine with Lubuntu where I test most; I don't recall issues with Xubuntu either but I'm rarely testing there either)

It's now the morning later & the issue is still not evident on booting the system. Flipping issue to incomplete.
Thanks @Kai-Heng Feng
