Bug Description

I was checking out the current boot ISO and its predecessor, both of which have a problem finding /casper/vmlinuz when trying to boot from the main menu. Can someone from the Ubuntu Studio team check to see what the issue is?

This issue was discovered in the CD images dated 20200329 and 20200328.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1869928/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

As this bug report is about the current livecd image, I was unsure as to whether it could be assigned to a specific package. If someone can advise, please let me know.

Sadly, since this is about the current daily ISO and those change every day, this bug is invalid. If this were about the upcoming beta image, I'd be more inclined to tag something with it. But, really, it could also be an error with the iso download iteslf. Please download the latest ISO daily image and try again, or wait for the BETA to test.

BTW, I checked the latest image and had no issues.

I zsynced to the current version of Ubuntu Studio iso file (dated March 31 20:40), and it is still affected by this bug and the workaround above works.

*So the iso file suffers from a serious bug, and I ask the Ubuntu Studio team to fix it.*

I have also tested the corresponding Ubuntu, Lubuntu and Xubuntu iso files. They are not affected by this bug. It is very obvious that the bug is caused by the problem for grub to identify the lowlatency kernel, that is used by the Ubuntu Studio iso file.

@eeickmeyer,

You had no issues? What computer did you use for testing? Did you test in a virtual machine? Could there be a race condition that affects only some computers?

I tested in a Dell Precision M4800 with a cloned system from a zsynced iso file, so I am sure that there are no download errors and the cloning process in my main computer is robust.

Ok, so I just did a quick test: downloaded the beta iso and ran it on kvm - I was able to reproduce the issue. I was getting to the iso boot menu and whichever entry I pressed I always got "file /casper/vmlinuz not found" error.

I an happy to confirm that this bug is squashed in the new beta version of Ubuntu Studio. The cloned system works for me both in BIOS mode and UEFI mode.

Thanks a lot for fixing it :-)
