Bug Description

File upstream as https://bugzilla.icculus.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6566

Originally Lubuntu 19.10 daily
deb cdrom:[Lubuntu 19.10 _Eoan Ermine_ - Beta amd64 (20190926.1)]/ eoan main multiverse restricted universe

I adjusted the monitor.settings to match my setup, also changing the primary screen and it did exactly what I wanted, however the wallpaper appears to have been misplaced; the top.of.wallpaper is now displayed on my bottom.monitor with my top.monitor having no wallpaper (this bottom half of wallpaper isn't shown)

The importance of this is probably MINIMAL.

I have been able to re-create it, but it only seems to occur with a specific setup, and is likely linked to https://github.com/lxqt/lxqt/issues/1709 or https://github.com/lxqt/lxqt/issues/1704 (though upstream suspect those two bugs & others are linked).

Note: The right-click behavior on the screen without wallpaper is likely to be Openbox only (ie. openbox menu), where as the screen with wallpaper will remain Lubuntu/LXQt behavior.

---
LXQt 0.16 on Lubuntu Hirsute; this has been re-created. Also note (see comments #10-12)
- On the TOP.monitor I'm getting OPENBOX menu on right click
- On the BOTTOM.monitor, I'm getting standard LXQt menu

Also occurs on opensuse tumbleweed & debian bullseye, & fedora 33

Filed upstream as https://github.com/lxqt/lxqt/issues/1925 (closed as only occurs with openbox)

I just experienced this exact issue on Fedora 33
LXQt 0.15.0, Qt 5.15.2

I have NOT experienced this though in opensuse which is a later LXQt (this is more noticable due to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxqt-config/+bug/1905947 which causes the monitor configuration to be set on each login, which impacts Fedora 33 just like Lubuntu, but not the later opensuse LXQt 0.16)

on adjusting monitor.settings to match my setup, my-top monitor now is black, and top.of.wallpaper is now displayed on my-lower monitor; ie. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxqt-session/+bug/1845756 - this issue is petty & minor (logout & login usually fixes this, but I can't do that currently due to prior issue)...

changing wallpaper still had black-no-wallpaper top monitor??? which doesn't usually occur as far as I recall, top of wallpaper still showing bottom display only which I expected to resolve issue.. but still ignoring this.. as impossible to explore properly until other issue is fixed

As I have not experienced this in opensuse (tumbleweed); maybe it's related to Qt, as the other issue I mention (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxqt-config/+bug/1905947) is Qt related doesn't occur there either..

PLEASE NOTE:

I don't consider this bug an issue with regards Lubuntu.

Yeah it's a bug, however I've not experienced it (that I can recall recently) on an installed box.

repeat of testing covered in comments #10-12 on different box

On both dc7700 (#10-12) & this box, I was unable to correct issue (changing wallpaper would change half visible on the one display; other would remain black).

I also still have the OPENBOX menu appearing on one screen (black monitor), with LXQt/Lubuntu on the other (one showing wallpaper) which I don't recall noticing before..

Note: I had to have my.top monitor positioned as the bottom.display, and my-bottom monitor positioned as the top monitor.. meaning in normal testing I'd not likely notice this issue as it only occurs on a specific display configuration.

If this is reported upstream; that point will need to be made (I don't recall this occurring on opensuse with LXQt 0.16 so does the issue require openbox to occur? or is this specific to Lubuntu... needs testing on opensuse maybe next)

My tumbleweed is using openbox too, reaction is identical with menu being LXQt on the display with wallpaper, openbox menu appearing on now-black monitor...

Issue occurs with one screen orientation, reverse it and issue does not occur.

this needs to be filed upstream.

** Background

Originally filed at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openbox/+bug/1845756

Reported initially on Lubuntu 19.10, occurs all releases up to current development (hirsute). Also confirmed on opensuse tumbleweed, Debian Bullseye/sid, Fedora 33

Initially believed to be a LXQt issue, it was filed upstream (LXQt) at https://github.com/lxqt/lxqt/issues/1925 however if openbox is switched out and replaced with xfwm4, or icewm, the issue is gone. To return issue openbox needs only to be used, hence filing here.

** Description

On certain display configurations (one monitor above the other), clicking Apply causes one display to go black, and the other to have half the wallpaper.

Further, a right-click on the monitor that has background causes the LXQt menu to appear, however right-click on the other monitor (that is black) only has Openbox's menu appear

Note: if you reverse the top/bottom display, the issue does not occur.

** Expected Behavior

Wallpaper appear on both monitors (half on each)
LXQt menu appears on both monitors when right-click pressed

** Actual Behavior

On changing display configuration (2x displays, 1920x1080) with one display above the other, on clicking apply you get

- one monitor has no background, openbox menu appears with right-click
- other monitor has half of the wallpaper/background, LXQt menu appears with right-click

** Steps to Reproduce

- Two monitors, 1920x1080.
- (on LXQt) open Monitor.Settings and set one display above the other
- click Apply
- if issue doesn't occur, firstly I'd suggest logout & login again
- if issue still hadn't occurred, swap top & bottom monitors & re-apply. logout & login may be required as well.

(note I've had the logout/login required, and not-required; can't provide clues as to how that relates (insufficient testing-sample-size for picture sorry)

Note: If the top/bottom monitor is in one order, the issue will not occur. If so reversing the top/bottom will have the issue occur.

** Some system information

Distribution & Version: Lubuntu hirsute, Opensuse tumbleweed & Debian Bullseye
Kernel: 5.10.0-14, 5.10.16-1, 5.10.0-3

On Lubuntu, `openbox --version` reports "Openbox 3.6.1"

LXQt now 1.1.0.

My monitors are both still landscape; only change being swap left & right

You'll note background on my-left screen is none, my-right screen has left portion of wallpaper/background

I just noticed (again) the screen that doesn't have the wallpaper shows OPENBOX menu on right-click, the screen which has a wallpaper shows a LXQt or normal Lubuntu menu.

I logged out, logged in again & my-left-monitor still had no background, my-right-monitor had left-half-of-background-wallpaper... I attempted `sudo apt update; sudo apt full-upgrade` and a few packages upgraded and tried (logout/login) again but no difference.

Still have OPENBOX.MENU on my-left no-wallpaper-display & normal-Lubuntu.LXQt menu on my-right wallpaper-display

See next two comments for pics of OBMENU vs normal-Lubuntu-LXQt menu on right-click.

To correct issue, I needed to do 3 changes within Monitor.Settings before backgrounds appeared on both displays, and everything (right-click on background) worked as expected..

I still don't consider it a real problem; the lack-of-background allows you to see on Monitor.Settings.Apply if the issue was fixed, or the move failed to make a change.. To get it to work you really need to change it to something else (where issue is gone), then back to what matches this (or other) setup & it wallpaper isn't on both displays this issue is still an issue.. The issue never always appears, only occasionally (most commonly on first change after live boot)

No wallpaper now visible on my-left display, the left part of the wallpaper appears on my-right display... I closed-reopened the Monitor.Settings tab then dragged to the left screen.

Left screen now reacts very different to right-clicks on desktop (ie. openbox menu opens, no longer handled by LXQt) but that's no change.

Currently I'm using the lunar install (23.04), and I noticed that I can login using 'LXQt session' without issue...

However if I select the 'Lubuntu session' I get a wallpaper top display, but black screen bottom screen. I also get no LXQt panel (it's not appearing on the bottom screen where it belongs), nor is Ctrl+Alt+T etc. working with the Lubuntu session... The Lubuntu session is rather limited

Both LXQt session & Lubuntu session are using Openbox? Thus the addition of `lubuntu-default-settings` as maybe there's more involved than just openbox.

Sure I can fix by replacing `openbox` with `xfwm4`, `fluxbox` etc.. and I have no issues with the 'Lubuntu session', but why is 'LXQt session' working still even though the only WM installed currently (& thus being used) `openbox`.

This install is still very clean.

Possibly related, every once in a while, when I boot a Lunar ISO in QEMU, part of the right side of the screen fails to render. It's difficult to reproduce though - it happens at random. It's not just LXQt failing to render there - if I open a window and try to push it into the empty space, the part of it in the blank area vanishes as if I had pushed it off the screen. Yet attempts to resize the QEMU window indicate that the VM has the screen set to a larger size, as does the fact that some LXQt panel elements are missing as they (presumably) are in the blank area.

The attached screenshot of the QEMU window shows the problem.

If I open "Monitor settings" from the Application Menu and change the screen resolution, it appears to make the "missing" area of the screen come back.

I've positioned the monitor-settings window so it should appear on both monitors.. you'll note the picture of settings shows the monitors actually touching HOWEVER there is a huge gap between them in what is displayed & I cannot see anything in that gap...

If i move the mouse cursor from one window to another, there is a long delay (I have to keep moving mouse) before it re-appears...

I may have filed more on this issue on another bug report; but this is what I saw on search & don't have time to explore further currently.. It's NOT a major issue for me, as I've learnt how to mitigate this (by replacing openbox, or just re-adjusting displays a few times & it'll stop occurring)

On boot only 3 monitors connected to internal intel card are functional.. not a problem; open monitor.settings & enable the others.. & they have wallpapers & look good.

next I adjust the alignment of monitors to match my setup, and suddenly 4.4 of the monitors are black (no wallpaper) and part of the wallpaper only shows on one monitor...

if I right click the black monitors I'm getting OBMENU appearing and not expected LXQt menu...

I try re-adjusting the monitors again (numerous times) and no useful change... exit & re-enter monitor.settings (panel was still visible/usable!) & try again a few times, no go..

Exit & re-open monitor.settings (again) & this time I get wallpapers on all monitors & operation is EXACTLY was I'd want.. even have alignment of screens matching my setup..

People only do this screen alignment RARELY; on first setup, and on a 'blue moon' when they adjust their offices etc.. and in all cases where I experience this, I can usually resolve it in ~5 minutes.

---

I don't see it as critical, but its a little frustrating, and could be very confusing the first time.

In support; I'll just suggest end-users who experience it just replace `openbox` with `xfwm4` and the issue doesn't happen.
