Bug Description

Legacy laptop, Dell Vostro 1720, booted to black screen after fresh full disk install. Using ctrl-alt-f2 to drop to a terminal and issuing "startx" completed the boot process.

Installed NVidia 340 driver which crashed the current session and sent me to an endless GUI (sddm?) login loop where login immediately crashed back to the GUI login.

Rebooting from the login screen worked as expected and system is running fine now.

Hi guys!

Thanks for you job! However, the bug is still here. Just updated from 18.10 to 19.04 (using do-system-upgrade) and bumped into this issue. I have the same symptoms with the black screen, no reaction on Ctrl+Alt+F(n), dmesg (via ssh) with lots of output - relevant part pasted below. Driver version is 340.107-0ubuntu3 (installed via sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall). Tried to play with
GRUB_TERMINAL=console
and all combinations of two parameters in
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset slab_common.usercopy_fallback=Y"
(second one found somewhere in the inet). Nothing helps.

Let me know if any further information from me may help.

Regards,
A.

Hello, again, guys.

I found it was not the problem of the driver, but the LightDM manager. After assigning the SDDM for this function everything works fine. Looks like the upgrade has set LDM without asking.

Cheers,
A.

I have not tried running SDDM rather than the normal Ubuntu Desktop. Will try that tomorrow.

I still get the same error with Ubuntu 19.04 when I try to install the Nvidia driver. Anyone with a solution?
