Grub install to sda failed.

Reporting new bug - possible dupes, many old versions of grub

You booted the installer in efi mode, but your disks are not configured for that. Boot the installer in bios mode.

If I booted in EFI mode - then it did it for itself.

I know I don't have EFI here and never choose to so so.

First time I booted with the stick I let it just boot and installed.

Second time I tried - I used the boot menu on my PC to choose the stick - 2 options normal and UEFI - chose normal - same end result.

Your system has efi support. You either need to disable that support, or repartition your disks to support it. If it still crashes when not using efi, then it will file a new bug with new logs, which we can then take a look at.
