Bug Description

I don't have any experience with Anjuta

I don't have any experience with Anjuta. I installed it and followed the (frankly outdated) tutorial that explains how to make your first "Hello Wordl" project.

Problem is that I can't even start on this tutorial because Anjuta fails right from the start : it fails to create the new project (Gnome project, as per tutorial).

I uploaded a screen shot of the error message I get :

Anjuta is basically unusable as a consequence! :o(

Try installing cvs

Does CVS fix this problem ?

Unfortunately, I don't know how to install S/W using CVS, never done it.
I can just hope that they release a new version soon and that Breezy picks it up instantly..

Or maybe I should just wait for Anjuta 2.0 to be mature enough to be included in the Breezy repo ? How long will it take before Anjuta 2 replaces Anjuta 1 ?

installing cvs is very simple :
sudo apt-get install cvs

Thanks, just did that, cvs now installed :-)

But now, what do I type at the command line, to download/compile/install Anjuta, using cvs ?

You don't have to install anjuta again. Just try to create another project, it should work.
The problem wasn't anjuta itself, but the project generator, who seems to need cvs to run.

That didn't work, but it got me thinking, though. So I tried installing "build-essentials" and "gnome-core-devel". THat did it, Anjuta can now create new projects. So I guess all these pacakges should be in the list of dependcies for Anjuta.

However, the "Hello World" program from the tutorial, will not compile. It generates 3 warnings.

http://www.007.org.uk/~vtrouilliez/temp/Anjuta_2.png

So either there is another bug in Anjuta, or the tutorial is out of date, and asks the user to do things that he should not be doing.

Is there a good mailing list or web forum about Anjuta, where I could go, since the documentation/help files are apparently so out of date that they are useless ?

Okay, I eventually managed to compile and run the Hello World program, phew !
The tutorial is really out dated, if ones follows exactly what it says, which is the purpose of a beginners tutorial, well if you do that, things just don't work as expected :-/

I am moving this to wishlist severity for now. It would be ideal if this bug would get submitted to anjuta upstream. Thank you.

Seen in one comment in the Debian BTS:
"Your build environment is not a dependency of Anjuta - it is part of the base system that Anjuta can use. It is not Anjuta's fault if the base system is not properly configured or is lacking development packages. True, Anjuta could do better at explaining these problems but the real problem is outside Anjuta's control and can be difficult to identify in a generic manner."

So it looks like upstream would possibly not be interested in any missing dependency issues.

Marking as rejected, since upstream apparently doesn't care and neither do I anymore.
