Bug Description

== SRU Justification ==

Impact:
Buggy ACPI table causes brightness unable to be adjusted, which means
certification testing also fails.

Fix:
Quirk this model so that it no longer follows the Win8 AML path.

Testcase:
Test brightness adjustment on the machine. Already verified by test
kernel on LP#1231305.

--------

CID: 201304-13196 Dell Inspiron 5537

Unable to adjust the screen brightness on this system.
Tested with 3.8.0-29 and 3.8.0-30 kernel.

Step:
1. Install 12.04.3 and boot to desktop.
2. Try to adjust brightness with the brightness keys.
2. Try to adjust brightness in "Brightness and Lock" of System settings.

Expected result:
Brightness could be adjusted by using the brightness keys and by adjusting in "Brightness and Lock" of System settings.

Actual result:
1. Brightness keys events (keycode 224/225) were captured, but the brightness cannot be adjusted. Brightness level indiciator only changes between Max and Max - 1
2. Brightness cannot be adjusted in "Brightness and Lock" of System settings.

Disabling the ACPI backlight driver with "acpi_backlight=vendor" could make it work, but it also cause the touchpad and keyboard stop working.

Also verified with the latest mainline kernel 3.12rc2, the brightness level indicator could be changed from 0 - Max correctly by pressing the brightness keys, but the brightness still not changing.

Looks like the BIOS is flawed when it's running the win8 path.

Can you add the acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2012\" to the grub command line when booting the 3.8 kernel and see if the problem still exists? You can do that by adding acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2012\" to the variable "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT" in /etc/default/grub:

e.g:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2012\""

Then run "sudo update-grub".

Can you download the debs in http://people.canonical.com/~ypwong/lp1231305/, install them in 12.04.3, and test again?

Hello Anthony,

Verified with the deb files you provided, and without acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2012\" in grub
And the hotkey works, it can also be adjusted in system settings.
Thanks!

For the record, adding acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2012\" to grub command-line fixes the same problem on my HP ProBook 430 G1 with similar but slightly different VGA chipset (Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0a16]). Haven't tried the deb provided by Anthony in comment #31, but I don't suppose they would work, as the fix in blacklist.c seems to be vendor/product specific.

Could this be a more generic Haswell issue?

Attaching dmidecode and lspcpi on my HP 430 G1 system.

13.04 + proposed kernel (3.8.0-34)
13.10 + proposed kernel (3.11.0-14)

On saucy, the brightness hotkey could change the brightness level indicator, but the brightness cannot be changed

However, the brightness control works fine after -proposed
Thanks!
