Bug Description

Booting a live session of Lubuntu Saucy Alpha 2 desktop 32-bit does not get past the ubiquity dots. When booted without the default options quiet splash I see the following *fail* messages (when starting programs)

1. cups (should not be a show stopper)

2. zRAM (probably not a show stopper)

3. lightdm

It is possible to run a text screen with ctrl+alt+F1. It is responsive, several text applications work, also the network.

I was able to start a rescue graphics system with startx from a text screen. It complained about lightdm, started apport, and here I am. The title is bad, should be *plymouth dots", not ubiquity dots. Please change the title, whoever knows how to do it.

This problem exists in Virtualbox as well as in a real computer.

Thank you for your bug report, there was an issue with that version of lightdm, 1.7.6-0ubuntu2 got uploaded yesterday with a fix and 1.7.7-0ubuntu1 got rolled out today which includes the fix as well, could you update and see if that fix the problem for you?

I just checked, saucy-desktop-i386.iso is not yet updated. Please indicate, where I can find the new version of lightdm!

Or should I wait until today's version of saucy-desktop-i386.iso?

At second thought, I rebooted, went into the text screen with ctrl+alt+F1 and ran

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo service lightdm start

and now I have a working Lubuntu desktop environment.

So your fix solves the problem with lightdm, Sebastien :-)

Based on updating Lubuntu Alpha 1 to lightdm 1.7.7 it's still borked :^(

Lance, can you try my method, to update/upgrade from Alpha 2?

It is more likely to work for you with the desktop iso (which I use),
but I think there is a fair chance that it works also with the alternate
iso.

If it does not work for you, there must be some other bug too.

-o-

I also noticed that cups and zRAM did not start. Do you get the same errors?

Best regards

Nio, I just tried and it was a no-go, but maybe the proper update hasn't yet hit the US archives?

That said I've had a lot of other problems with this hardware during the Saucy testing cycle:

VIA C7 CPU @ 1500MHz
VIA CN700/P4M800 Pro/P4M800 CE/VN800 Graphics [S3 UniChrome Pro] (rev 01)
VIA VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60)
Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II] (rev 78)
1GB DDR2 RAM

That may soon fall into the "too old to support" category like the Pentium M's :^(

I have no experience of VIA. I'm testing now in VirtualBox and directly in some reasonably new hardware.

Using a late Alpha 1+ daily build (a couple of days before Alpha 2), I installed Lubuntu Saucy into a USB pendrive, and that installed instance ran nicely with my Pentium M.

Can you test Saucy in a newer computer (maybe only the desktop live) to get a feeling of it? This could help you separate general bugs from problems because of the VIA hardware.

It works OK with this hardware:

Intel Atom CPU 230 @ 1.60GHz
Intel 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
Intel N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)
Realtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller (rev 02)
2GB DDR2 RAM

And the behavior I'd originally described just showed a continually scrolling progress bar (now just dots), but on that old VIA hardware the "dots" actually freeze so that's probably either a kernel or X thing. I'll follow up on that later.

I have a sinilar problem with standard Ubuntu, on an Fujitsu Siemen Amilo Pro Notebook. Graphics chipset CN700/P4M800 Pro/P4M800 CE/VN800 Graphics [S3 UniChrome Pro].

Note: I had a similar problem with Lubuntu 12.10 (raring), see Bug 1122991. I have since switched from Lubuntu to Ubuntu.
