I recognize this problem. I use Lubuntu via VMWare Player 4.04. In the VMWare display settings the maximum resolution of the monitor is set to 1680 x 1050 (same as in host system: Windows XP). Looking under Display in System Profiler and Benchmark the settings are the same: 1680 x 1050.

The wallpaper is tiled after having start up Lubuntu. The trick is to change the wallpaper and then set it back after each start up. Of course however this should not be necessary.
