Can you test the latest mainline kernel(3.5-rc6)[0] to see if it also exhibits this bug? If it does, I'd like to perform a bisect to identify the commit that introduced this regression.

Hallo Joseph.

The first version introducing the bug is:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.6-quantal/

The last working is:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.5.7-quantal/

Thanks

Before I start the bisect can you test the latest mainline kernel to confirm the bug is not already fixed:
v3.7-rc7: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.7-rc7-raring/

Also, can test v3.5 final since 3.5.7 isn't linear to v3.6 final:
v3.5 final: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.5-quantal/

If v3.5 final does not have the bug, I'll start a bisect between v3.5 and v3.6.

Thanks in advance!

However, it seems like the LKML thread states this bug does not happen in v3.6 and the commit in question was introduced in v3.7-rc1:

git describe --contains 65fe1f0f66a57380229a4ced844188103135f37b
v3.7-rc1~138^2~9

Assuming v3.5 does not have the bug and v3.7-rc7 still has the bug, I started a bisect between v3.5 and v3.6.

The first test kernel was built up to commit:
b13bc8dda81c54a66a1c84e66f60b8feba659f28

The test kernel can be downloaded from:
http://people.canonical.com/~jsalisbury/lp1080320/

Once the testing requested in comment #7 is complete, can you test the first test kernel?

Thanks

Hallo Joseph
refering to #7:

v3.7-rc7: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.7-rc7-raring/ is not working

v3.5 final: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.5-quantal/ works

The test kernel (b13bc8dda81c54a66a1c84e66f60b8feba659f28)
http://people.canonical.com/~jsalisbury/lp1080320/ reproduce the bug

Halo Joseph
The new kernel works without problems, it boot without excluding acpi and in the log there aren't fake disk errors.
Installed:

If instead I boot with acpi=off, the system seems to start well, then hang and show disk errors and the filesystem is mounted in readonly.

I can confirm this is happening for me in 12.10 3.7.0 kernel. No kernel logs since I can't get out of the fake ata NULLs but I managed to write down a few errors I noticed:
Warning at: /build/buildd/linux-3.7.0/drivers/ata/libata_core.c 2947 ata_timing_find_mode +0x66/0x80()
ata_timing_find_mode: unable to find timing for xfer_mode 0x0.
Unable to handle NULL pointer dereference at 0000000000000010

It could be unrelated to this and more about USB devices but I'm going to try the kernels from 3c4cfadef6a1665d9cd02a543782d03d3e6740c6 anyway.
However the 12.10 kernel 3.7.0 will boot with acpi=off but then my USB devices are not functional such as my mouse. When acpi is on, it will stop while adding USB devices such as my headset Roccat Kave and Ace Edge T2 and give the libata Warnings from above before the stop.
